GROUP PROJECT 1: Writing a team report

After reading the graded reader by Ken Harris, entitled The Hacker (Burlington Books, 2010). The students of 3rd ESO have  done a book review. They can feel now almost like journalists, but what about if they imagine they are real journalists and their boss asks them to write a report on a topic related to IT?

 Follow these steps:

1. In groups of five you will look for information (You can check this website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/topics/safety-and-privacy/on and brainstorm ideas about one of the topics suggested by your teacher:
A. Write a report about the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. Explain the dangers and how users can avoid them.
B. Write a report about all the problems a hacker can cause and find out some measures that Internet users can adopt to surf the net safely.
C. Write a report about the use of computers in schools in your country. Write how computers could be used in English to make the subject more interesting.

2. After having looked for some information on the topic, make a list of prons and cons (advantages and disadvantages).

3. Write the addressee or in Cat. 'destinatari' (TO:), the sender or in Cat. 'remitent' (FROM:), the date and the subject at the top of the report.

4. Introduce the topic (introduction), with expressions like: 'Many people believe that a hacker cannot cause many problems, but in fact'...; 'Nowadays the Internet is a very useful tool...but in this report we will show the dangers of the Net'...; 'Computers are used in schools more and more because...', etc.

5. Write a paragrahp using the list of good points (pros) and then another paragraph using the list of bad points (cons).

6. Write a paragraph expressing your point of view and concluding (opinion + conclusion). For example: "On the one hand ('d'una banda') people admit that the Internet is necessary for our lives, but on the other hand ('de l'altra banda'...) others said it's dangerous because...", but in my opinion / I think that if you use it correctly it doesn't present any risk".
  • Use linking words: and, but, also ('també'), however ('tanmateix'), first, second, third, on the one hand...on the other hand, in addition ('a més').
 7. After writing the draft of your report, check it several times (to correct possible mistakes) and finally, write and hand in the last version to your teacher: it must be one -per group- neatly presented and well-written report!

 8. Finally, you will read the report in front of your classmates.
  • IMPORTANT: Take seriously this task, work hard and be respectful  of your classmates and their work. Work always cooperatively and if you don't agree with someone, just  come to an agreement with him/her without arguing.
  • Your group project will be counted as part of the mark of this subject.
Good luck and good work! :)

HALLOWEEN!!!
For Halloween we have watched a very spooky story...

Its title is 'The door' and it's about a real experience of a mother and two daughters who really believed that there was a ghost at their home.

You can see the video here and judge for yourself if the story is scary, isn't it?
